Please sign this petition. Save the beautiful houses in Champaign, Illinois. Once they're gone, they can never be replaced.
I'm both a former Townie and U of I Grad. I lived near this home for over a decade. This is really outrageous. There has to be a better solution. Please think long-term about this decision.
This building is an important part of Champaign architectural history and should be preserved.
This is a beautiful piece of Champaign history. So much has been lost already.
I believe that old historical homes like this should be saved they can’t be reproduced and are part of our history as well as they add Historic value to our community.
I am so tired of people destroying historical sites, House, statues.. etc. so they can and will never have it again. You learn from history, or you run the chance of making the same mistakes again. In this case they want to destroy it to put up a parking lot so students can have a place to park their car ? Give me a break....
This home is in my beautiful, historic neighborhood. We really need to teach our children the value of history and respect of what has come before us. We are all a part of history. History is the story of all of us. Please reconsider this part of the plan. I do not understand why this building is going instead of some of the truly blighted properties adjacent to it.
This is a beautiful home and a part of the local history. The school should not be permitted to destroy this for a parking lot. A plan should be developed that meets the needs of the school while maintaining the historical integrity of the area.
Historic buildings in our community should be saved! Nothing like them exist or will come again. Don't be short sighted.
This house benefits Champaign more than a parking lot will.
I’m signing because I like and care about all American history.
It's a verification historic home that shouldn't be tired down
It's a beautiful historical fine that shouldn't be torn down
Saving history is as important as building new. Beautiful building
Historic architecture must be saved!
It’s history and beautiful
It's a beautiful old house and needs to be preserved for the future. We need to stop distorying our heritage
Beautiful property and history!
It appears to me that demolition is a rush job. Across the US, we are demolishing too many historic buildings, at taxpayer expense, that could be refurbished and put to use.
Find another place to put your parking lot, Unit 4.
I may not, live there but I can recognize when an historical building needs to be saved. Tearing this down would be a crime.
Please save the historic Burnham house from demolition. I'm asking that the School Board act to preserve Champaign's very historic Burnham House. Please don't destroy an iconic piece of history so beautiful as this is.
I love older architecture and history. I'm actually wanting to be a history teacher, and this house needs to be saved!
We have a national treasure in our midst and need to preserve it for future generations.
This is not the example you want to set for your young students. That a parkng lot is valued above a work of art, a piece of important architectural history.
I think this will be a big community regret. You should not pave paradise and put in a parking lot.
I have watched Champaign erase it’s History without blinking or thinking. Stop the Sad Idiocy. Save this Historic Building.
This building is a beautiful part of the historic fabric of champaign. It sets a poor example to students to tear down history to clear way for a parking lot. Such a short term thoughtless waste instead of modeling thoughtful planning, historical awareness and creative thinking.
This is a historic land mark! I don't understand why any one would want to destroy it! We have lost so much of our history lets not lose this!
Historic buildings need to be preserved not torn down.
Once gone, this part of history can never be brought back. Please reconsider. Even
This is an architecturally and historically significant home and should be saved! Demolishing it would be shortsighted, and Champaign would lose an important piece of history.
I love history
This looks like a beautiful property with lots of history. Why destroy it for a PARKING LOT?! seems CRAZY!
This is a Burnham house it has historical value it should not be taken down to put up a parking lot!
Beautiful historic home. Can't believe it would be torn down for a PARKING LOT!
Preserving historic buildings is important our legacy.
These properties not only reflect the treasured character of the community, but they bring economic value. You could never replicate a structure like this, and believe me, no one is going to stop in your town to look at another parking lot. Parking lots are archaic - innovative, progressive communities implement smart solutions to vehicular challenges. Get a trolley, uber, etc and preserve the past!
I have visited this home many times in my past, and it is truly special and an homage to our history in this town. We must remember that architecture with quality, stories, great design and history are more important than cars. Also, adding yet, more asphalt and pavement to our town in a time of flux climate change, is a very bad idea. Please save this home for the sake of integrity for our historical designers and artists. Humanity is already at stake in a world of materialism and expansion.
It’s sad to see historical homes like this being demolished for something as silly as a parking lot
Needs to be saved to preserve the history of Champaign County.
This is an important part of our heritage and architectural history. Please don't destroy it! To create a parking lot on the footprint of a historic house is a travesty, and a mistake too many towns and cities have made. Let's be smarter than that.
I hate to lose beautiful archeticurally designed buildings at a time when all I see going up are boring engineer developed buildings
I went to UIUC and it's a great community that needs to preserve some of its important past while it grows.
Preservation and sustainability are compatible.
A love and appreciation for history is the foundation of expanding your knowledge.
These historic homes and building are being destroyed all across the country at an unparalleled rate!We need to preserve the history, the architecture and the samples of building styles! It's sickening!
You can always use the building for something else later on , keep it up. build around if you must. Teacher pay is low so make it a new teacher's apartment house.
This is absolutely asinine!! You are going to tear this down for a parking lot???Who ever had this idea needs to slap themselves in the face then resign. You are too stupid to be in education
I love beautiful, historical homes! Find somewhere else for the parking lot!
I'm tired of seeing history destroyed.
You cant tear down a beautiful piece of history.
Historic buildings should be preserved whenever possible. Children should SEE history, not just read about it. Old homes are a link to the past.
History should not be forgotten & demolished for a parking lot.
History needs to be preserved!
Once history is gone you can't replace it. Also, is History an important part of a child's education would be very hypocritical to than tear down an historical structure to pour a parking lot
History should be saved and cherished . not tore down for a stupid parking lot or something of no real value. These are part of our heritage
Please save.
WTF....... What is the school Board thinking
This building should be designated a historic property so as to have protection from demolition.
Old buildings should not be torn down for a "parking lot".
What a waste of historic resources! Please save this house!
You have a house designed by a famous Victorian architect. I've seen too many Victorian homes turned into parking lot.
It is a local treasure.
Historic building are being lost for ridiculous reasons. Things need to change and this school district is breaking the law.
I know that I am not a resident or taxpayer, so I am owed little accountability. I want to add my voice, however, as a plea and recommendation from a neighbor: please don’t throw away your heritage. If you save this building, it will become a daily lesson for students on the importance of both history and the humanities.
Pls preseve our history! We are losing too many historic and beautiful structures. A parking lot does not honor our history. At the very least, pls allow someone to purchase the home to be moved. Thx!
Build a parking lot? Come on you must be joking! Haven’t you learned nothing from mistakes in the past?
We need to save history...not just teach about!!
a parking lot???? no!
Why demolish a historic structure if there are other options?
i do not this house torn down
I feel we should value our foundation more, our roots, find ways to use them to support growth instead of razing everything and making a mess of building it “better”. So far we’re NOT improving/learning. Why not make offices or even teach classes, Music, English, Theatre, Psychology?Make your parking lot a stacking one, or make the students park “out” and ride a shuttle like at the hospital, the U of I. There’s no winning this, but it certainly is disheartening. Class will tell!
because there are so any homeless people and this could be put to good use. THINK BEYOND THE BOX THAT IS WHAT THEY TEAC YOU IN SCHOOL ....do you get it ?
It's a Historic home that needs to stay around.
We need to maintain these historical houses
This is such a historically important home. It needs to stay. I was at UIUC in the 70's when Joni Mitchell sang these immortal words ... "Take paradise and put in a parking lot."The undergrad library was built underground to save Morrel plots because corn can't grow in the shade. Find alternative ideas.
We don't need more parking lots!
Please do not demolish this important piece of history!
Oh why would you tear down this gem
Historically significant home should remain!
Beautiful, historical and time-honored construction that ought to be treasured, not torn down.
that is a great point!!!
There is no need to tear down this beautiful historic home
The beautiful 19th century Burnham House is an important of its local history and should be preserved!
History should be preserved
Preserving our culture and our history is absolutely a must. We cannot destroy our history and forget our heritage.
Brad smith
We need to preserve history and these beautiful homes
Save the historic home!
We need to keep these historical buildings intact. They are part of our history and deserve to be preserved for future generations!
This historic house is irreplaceable and should remain for future generations. Please respect significant historic architecture.
Historic houses shouldn’t be taken down to make way for parking lots.
Once destroyed, it will be gone forever. Preserve this historic home! No parking lot!
This house is a jewel never to be destroyed
Historic homes should be preserved.
This is of our history and should be preserved.
I love old homes.
It is beautiful. It should be preserved!
I believe we should preserve our history.
Jackie Mangold
This is a beautiful structure. Have some forethought as to what you want your city to look like for your kids and grandkids. Demolishing history for another parking lot is a travesty.
Because history and architecture need to be preserved. In a hundred years, people will marvel at the stupidity that tore down that beautiful structure.
I am signing, because we need to save our history not destroy it!
Old buildings need saved, not destroyed. Where there's a will there's a way.
Save history!
We need to preserve history!
Too many beautiful historic homes are being torn down for stupid reasons.
Don’t take away the history!!
Don't they teach history in school? Shame!
Sheila Wade-We are losing our towns history
You should be teaching these kids to value history, not destroy it.
You can build a parking lot somewhere else, you can’t replace this house
This house is a treasure!
We need to preserve history not pave it! Ignorant people need to be stopped.
What an insult to history!!!
This is History for all. A parking lot is not.
We need to preserve our history, stop demolishing it. Shame on the school board!
Loss for generations
The future generations need to be able to see and experience the quality of historical architecture in order to develop an understanding of past generational ideals. We revere and respect ancient historical relics. If we continue to destroy recent examples of architectural excellence, our children and grandchildren will not have any frame of reference to learn from.
I believe in the preservation of historic buildings. Once you tear these Beauties down, you can never get them back. Find someplace else to put your parking lot.
We need to save history.
History people. Can't erase history.
History needs to be preserved for our children and future generations!
The history and architecture of this house is much more important than a parking lot.
Old houses matter. It’s shameful to think anyone thinks this is a good idea. Please develope some taste.
"The history and architecture of this house is much more important than a parking lot." I agree with Peggy Hamilton. Been upset about this since I first heard of it last year.
This is a historic home that is irreplaceable.
The decision is sadly short sighted and sends the wrong message to the school children it is supposed to better serve.
Historic properties are important. Save them while we still can!
I'm signing because demolishing this beautiful historic home is an injustice to the local community, a slap in the face of public history, and a sacrilege to any future attempts to preserve our past! Invest in the past, don't destroy it! House's like this can never be recreated with the amount of quality craftsmanship and materials from a century ago. Invest money to save it, update it, and turn it into a unique venue for a school, community, etc. The amount of money that it takes to bulldoze, demolish, scrap, haul off more debris to landfills to destroy the environment, rent those machines....the money that would take is abysmal! Invest in our history and the historical buildings that were built. The past is all we have! It's 2018 for pete's sake! PRESERVE!!
Any homes with histoty are irreplacable. Champaign needs every each one
Our history needs to be saved and preserved not demolished for a parking lot!
This is an important part of history, once gone can never come back. It needs to be shared with generations to come
Historic Home should stay put! Build your parking lot elsewhere!
You want to tear down this architectural gem to put in a parking lot?! How about if the school board uses the house for meetings, events, a place for visiting teachers to stay, or any number of potential classes to educate students?
Please save this gorgeous house. There has to be a way the school district could make use of it. Thank youPatricia Kane
Need to stop destroying our historic architecture.
Destroying a historical building for a parking lot is ridiculous
This home should be saved!!
I think that historic buildings are more important than parking lots. Especially when the architect is so well known.
Preserving history is more important than a parking lot.
Keep history.
The benefits of keeping houses like this far exceeds any gain you may get from yet another parking lot. The mansion I'm restoring is not located in what might be called a genteel neighborhood, but numerous people from all across the demographic spectrum have stopped to tell me they appreciate what I'm doing. These old houses have a positive effect on people!!
History needs to he saved..
Some things just have to be saved.
This house is too amazing to demolish.
OLd homes are a part of history! They need to be loved and lived in, not demolished!!
We must preserve the history that is irreplaceable. “Take paradise, put up a parking lot”...
It's wrong to remove history
History is very important and shouldn't be removed! Historic homes are better built and should be preserved.
It’s a shame that we destroy history for a parking lot.
History should not be destroyed for a parking lot.
It is a shame to destroy this beautiful historical home.
Save our culture, stop putting up parking lots
These are architectural treasures that cannot be replaced.
Do not tear down what cannot be replaced. The value of this historical home is far greater than a parking lot.
We need to cherish our past and where we came from.
Cherish historical beauty.
There is never a good reason to destroy a cities historic places... Least of all to do so to expand a parking lot
It's part of our heritage and history. Too much of that is being destroyed, and by a well-known historical figure. Could it be moved, as a compromise, even though it's not the same as staying in place?
History should be preserved!!!
We need to preserve history!
This house is a part of history and should be left untouched. Why demolish when it is perfectly inhabitable? Stop destroying history.
Tearing this down to put in a parking lot is wrong!!
It’s a famous landmark and should be preserved.
Park somewhere else! Stop destroying what can never be replaced
I believe in historic preservation, not asphalt.
This place needs to stay just like it is. It's a piece of history.
Historic homes give a community beautiful and mighty roots to grow into the future.
I live a block from the mansion and dismayed the city council cares nothing about the historic nature of my neighborhood and is in the process of destroying it. Makes me sick to my stomach. This council will never get my vote after this crime.
We need to preserve our historic Landmark.
History must be saved for our future generations to enjoy. Old homes are our roots to past history!
This historic house should be saved
It needs to be saved.
We must keep our historic past for future generations to appreciate.
Buildings can be built anywhere, a building like this with the history and the craftsmanship, however, can never be rebuilt. Shame on you for even considering tearing this building down!
A beautiful piece of architectural. Shame on this School Board , that does not see the richness and wealth in beauty like this. Looking at architecture like this, develops the soul and teaches respect and honor.
Robin Hicklin
Historic, well built structures should not be torn down to make room for parking lots. I'm sure another option is available.Save the Burnham house!
I AM A HISTORIAN !!
Historic building are here to show us the quality and craftmanship of a time gone by... You dont destroy a Mona Lisa for a paint by number!
It is important to keep significant historical structures to maintain links toothpaste AND address future conditions when other transportation means replace fossil fuel methods used by individuals.
This cause is very important to my sister, and I support her 100%.
Don't let the liberals destroy more history!!!
Save historic houses
Let's not tear down this wonderful part of history, especially for a parking lot.
I think we need to persevere history.
Too many historic homes are being torn down. I am all for preserving the past. Please save this home!!
I agree with the arguments put forth below and encourage better planning of resources. As a student, I would love to take classes in a historic home. Please try.
So little is left in the US. A parking lot can go pretty much anywhere.
I cherish And value History.
It's historic and should be a respected part of our past to celebrate and educate. Park your car somewhere else.
I just love historic homes. The craftmanship the beauty, design is unbelievable. They have so much history and architecture. Please save this beautiful home!!!!
Burnham was a very important historical figure in the world of architecture. Put the parked cars somewhere less offensive!
It's a historical site
when we lose our past, our future is then worthless. For a parking lot to destroy beauty...oy
I really think this building should be saved. It is worth so much more then a parking lot. Let's not lose this beautiful building. It bothers me that the board pushed thus through the proposed demolition by lumping it with two lesser buildings. These buildings should have been voted on separately and the Burnham House should be saved .
This is a beautiful part of history. It should be protected. Not leveled!
It's beatiful
It’s absolutely rediculous to be tearing down a piece of American history to build a parking lot.
The signals another senseless degradation of an old residential neighborhood period when will people understand that you simply cannot replace the stuff with parking. If anything the pendulum has to move the other way Mash Transit walking have to be encouraged and density has to be restored to the city core. It is even more tragically upsetting to realize that this was a functioning working piece of Real Estate till some misguided hideously outdated planning director decided to take game at increase parking at the expense of this historic Jewel. Get with the times the wave of the future is not in this direction do not make a mistake.
It's beautiful
Save this beautiful building
We need to preserve the historic home of Illinois!
I'm signing because historical preservation is far more important than a parking lot. The property should be used by the school district: its very presence is an amenity! The school board needs to be creative and think of educational uses for this beautiful property.
Please don't tear down a building with such historic significance to PUT UP A PARKING LOT!
We do not need another parking lot! This is a beautiful home! Preserve historical homes!!
Phil lawalin asked me to.
My friend asked me to.
Oh, such a beautiful old structure with such rich history! Please don't tear it down!
Need to preserve our historic buildings!!
The Burnham needs to be saved as an example of good architecture and kept for history.
This beautiful house is a wonderful example of great architecture.
Shouldnt tear down a historical building for a parking lot!!!! This is history something that can't be rebulit
Leave historical buildings alone. They are important to our future.
I'm signing because we must preserve historic structures. A parking lot is a waste. Preserve the building for future generations. Use it as a lesson for the students. Don't allow the building to be destroyed.
It's a historical site that should be preserved.
Too many historic buildings have been torn down only for the decision to be regretted later. Save this house!
It is a part of history and in beautiful condition. It should be preserved.
As a Fine Arts graduate of the University of Illinois, I greatly appreciate the high quality of architecture in Urbana Champain. Demolishing the Burnham House would disgracefully diminish the historic fabric.
Historical Architecture is important to our culture.
This is a work of art. Replacing it with a parking lot is a disgrace.
It wouldbe a crime to destroy this beautiful historic house. Please, parking lots can be built anywhere but treasures like this home cannot be replaced.
Kristen asked me too.
I grew up in Illinois, and there is so much beauty and history in much of the architecture. Schools are supposed to help preserve and educate. Not destroy and tear down.
Do not trade this house for a parking lot.
Burnham's contributions to American architecture and planning are huge, and this residential structure tells an important part of his story and Champaign's story.
We should respect and save historical sites.
Architecture is a shared visual connection between present and past. The works of the Chicago founding fathers, of whom Daniel Burnham is one, are rare treasures that belong to our collective history. This building can be an integral part of the new Central High School rather than just a hot black surface on which to park a car.
History and preservation MATTER!!!
We must save our historically important places.
I'm signing because when the importance of a new parking lot is balanced against the importance of preserving a historic structure there is no contest; the structure must be preserved. Those who educate our future leaders need to lead by example themselves.
Architectural preservation
I feel like there are other ways besides destroying this home
Why doesn't the school build a parking garage for parking? The house could absolutely be used for other things like offices, tutoring and a library
History is important
an historic home of such architectural significance should not be destroyed for a parking lot.
History!
Historic homes like this one should definitely be saved. What a waste it would be to not do so!
I’m signing because I enjoy viewing and exploring architecture and respect its historic value. I am a retired Art Teacher of Dist. 61. I use to take my students to view fine Architecture in Central Illinois. It would be a crime to destroy this well know Architectural Structure. Ann Bruckner B.S.,M.S. both in Art
Never destroy history! The history of this home is more important than a parking lot!
We need to Preserve America's history --- now
You must be crazy to tear that down! That is apart of historic home.. If you lived were we live it would not fly..
Please do not demolish this amazing piece of history and architecture! Shame on you.
We don't need Historic Houses destroyed for parking lots --- find another place you idiots
I️ love this house!
It's beautiful.
There’s way too many architecturally significant buildings being demolished.
I don't want this beautiful, historic home to be destroyed!
Destroying a historic home in good condition for a parking lot? Are you nuts?
Save this beautiful building
Keep original architecture, providing interesting, inspiring space for learning.
Historical significant structures need to be honored and revered, especially one of this magnitude.
Historic architecture needs saving!! Preserving our history is important.
Old houses built by hand by real craftsmen and not in factories are becoming fewer and farther between .
Good architecture should not be destroyed
I am an architect. I have seen plenty of buildings that served their time bit were ready to be razed. This building is not one!
Lived here my whole life. Let's save these historic buildings from being parking lots
Historical importance
A parking lot, really? What about restoring and keeping the history?
Use the damn bus !!
I believe it is possible to serve both our kids and our community. This landmark deserves our expending at least an effort to find alternatives.
Because it just make me sick that all our historical buildings, monument are just been torn away. Our history isn't that long ago and we need to keep what we have to remind the future generations where we came from and how far we've came. No respect.
It is history.!
What is the insane rush to demolish this beautiful, historic, and inspiring home? For a piece of nasty asphalt? Why demolish it anyway? This whole business sounds so ridiculous and actually harmful for the neighborhood and city of Champaign. So many creative, thoughtful, forward-thinking options. Very unenlightened.
Do not destroy history. Leave it stand. Go back to the drawing board on this idea.
We shouldn’t pave paradise to put up a parking lot!
Historic houses shouldn’t be parking lots. Repurpose it, but don’t tear it down. Outrageous.
Historical mansions need to be preserved! The only burden on society is the ignorant idiots that decided it needs to be demolished. Such a beautiful home.
I grew up in Champaign and still live here. When I was in school, I walked to/from school; didn't have a car. Why do students now think they have to drive to school and put pressure on the school board for more parking space. It's ridiculous ! The town's history is important, especially to the "townies" and should be preserved for us, as well as future generations. The Burnham House is beautiful and a part of history; I don't want to see it demolished. It seems today people tear down just to build something different without regard to historical significance or regard for the town. There has been too much of that all over the country. I value tradition and history. Come to your senses, before it's gone forever, and find an alternative direction to go. Save what history this town has and don't let it be forgotten. "New" and "change" are not always the best answer. A PARKING LOT !!!! Idiots !!!
History should be preserved for others to be able to appreciate and learn. You can’t know where you’re going without knowing where you’ve been
Some things should be saved for remembering!
The house is a historic part of Campaign history and should be preserved.
We can not continue to lose our historical and architectural heritage to parking lots and rapacious development.
So beautiful & majestic-such a part of our Champaign's history! Just hate to see it go!
Seriously a parking lot. Shame on CSB this is a landmark.
It would be shameful for them to throw this magnificent home away. It is a treasure!!!
Historical site should trump parking lots. Get your heads out of the fog.
Save history for future generations
I care about history. It is wrong to destroy something so beautiful to make room for a parking lot.
I was born and raised in Champaign; My sister rented an apartment in the Burnham Mansion when I was an impressionable teen. I have always admired the house, especially after my Architectural History class at the U of I. I have always loved Champaign, but demolishing one of only ten remaining Burnham-designed residences would be the blackest of marks on the City I love. If you “Care Enough” to save the old Central High Building and renovate it, then save an even greater treasure - The Burnham Mansion.
I drove by the building many times when living in Champaign, it would be a shame to demolish it. It's a beautiful place!
Scott Galbreath
I live in the Champaign neighborhood where the stately Burnham Mansion is located. I've been shocked and dismayed over these many months at the short-sighted views that Unit 4 school board members and city of Champaign council members possess. It's frightening to realize that we elected these characters to represent us, and I do wonder if any of them have taken a single class on history or architecture. If gutting the heart of an irreplaceable historic neighborhood is their best "answer" to the question of where to put the new high school, our town is in very serious trouble.
This is a valuable piece of local and national history!
Save history
I grew up in a small town in Indiana -- my town lost a lot of these architectural treasures over the years. Don't lose your character, Champaign
I live a block away from Central, to the SW, in an 1890s cottage (where the Wilbers lived while building their daughter Ella's mansion on University Ave.). I've spent 40 years trying to restore my little cottage. WHY would I agree to let these three city landmarks fall to a bulldozer? The Burnham house GONE for 25 parking spaces? HELL NO! I've put up with students learning to park and drive down my street for 40 years, and will do so for another 20. They NEED to learn to parallel park! (Sorry, an attempt to lighten this life or death situation with a bit of humor...)
It would be tragic to have this piece of history destroyed.
A parking lot versus a historic home? You have another place to build this school! Use it!
Born (at Burnham Hospital) and raised in Champaign, IL
It would be crazy to tear this down. I went to school in Brookline where that school was build right around the Edward Devotion House, which was on Paul Revere's route. We need to preserve historically significant homes!
Historic home myst be preserved.....
It would be s shame to tear down this grand old home for a parking lot.
That is historically significant
I care about architectural significance in my home town.
I love old houses
No more parking lots! This is a beautiful historical monument, they need to find another place fir their damn parking lots
Architecturally significant buildings shouldn't be torn down, especially to put up a parking lot.
Charlotte has already destroyed most of it’s historic structures. Let’s put a stop to it.
This beautiful historic home is a staple in my hometown. History deserves to be preserved. Save this home!!
21st c. planning necessarily includes consideration of 21st c. issues. The 21st c. will realize, in automation, the equivalent of the industrial revolution of the 19th c. An indisputably nationally historic property coming down for 25 parking spots that will see their utility come and go before the middle of this century is, at best, poor planning. Moody's, "Wacker's Manual of the Pan of Chicago" was "Especially Prepared for Study in the Schools of Chicago". In its introduction (at least in the 1916 2nd ed copy I have here) there is a photo of a "Meeting of 1000 school principals, Eighth grade teachers and officials of the Board of Education with the Chicago Plan Commission." The very plan Daniel Burnham contributed to was studied in public schools in Chicago, as it concerned urban/community planning. That a school district in this country chose to pursue, for demolition and 25 parking spaces, a property blue-printed by Burnham's iconic architectural firm, is a testament to eithe
Historical preservation is more important than a new school.
My mom asked.
I believe in preserving instead of destroying.
historic homes cannot be repkaced and there is always room fo a dumb parking lot somewhere like a strip mall gone under.
History is important.
A Beautiful Historic Home should not be destroyed!!
Education. It should support history, the community, the important cultural artifacts. Please don't destroy this piece of history!
This is a Historic house and to many are gone
It’s important to keep historic structures standing in communities in order to help give the community a sense of history and pride.
Don't destroy this treasure!
We need to preserve the past.
This is a historic landmark which should never be demolished for a parking lot. Go back to the drawing board!
Do not demolish this beautiful piece of history. Turn into a museum or school admin building or something!
It is a beautiful house, please keep it that way!
What is it with Illinois school boards?? Are they all daft?? Tearing down a 100+ year old house for a parking lot????
This house is a historical part of Champaign and the architect very substantial. Sad that such a grand house would be sacrificed for a few parking spaces
There are many valid concerns cited in this petition. The history in this house and neighborhood has made Champaign-Urbana into a great place to live today, but once it is gone, it is gone forever! Find a way to preserve our history. School board, let's think outside the box!
We need to preserve this remarkable home which is one of but a few remaining from this great architect, so it can be admired and utilized by many future generations.
Save our history because it's important
I love history and it should be preserved..
As a Champaign native and person who appreciates architectural history and preservation, I ask the school board to reconsider and save this house.
We need to do better preserving out heritage!
I grew up in Champaign and believe in saving historic homes.
This is not progress for the community.
Preserve historic architecture...more important than parking lots.
There's more than enough parking in this town already.
History is important.
I formerly lived in the C-U area, and am a UIUC-UC graduate. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in the area. Preserve! Not destroy!
History is more important than parking lots
It’s an important part of our history.
This is insane.
History is where our stories begin!!!
I’m tired of destroying all the Historic Places!
I went to Central and always loved this house.
I am signing because the disposable mentality has got to stop! Especially when it comes to history!! And especially if there are viable alternatives that benefit not just the community, but our childrens’ heritage.
I live in a home built in the 1860's and believe in the importance of historic properties
We must preserve our past
I believe in saving historical home's and buildings
I believe it should be saved
To demolish this beautiful historic building and replace it with concrete would be an absolute disgrace.
This is a beautiful piece of local and national history.
We must protect our heritage. The loss is irreversible. It is our duty to our country.
I am signing because these are beautiful and historic buildings.
Save these buildings!
It is a historical home that warrants preservation. When history is destroyed, you can never get it back.
A better use would be to use the building to teach history, architecture and design students or to inspire Political Science majors to ultimately pursue a career in design. Historical buildings bring life to a campus. Don't let U of I become completely homogeneous.
This is a beautiful historic mansion! Please keep our history!
Parking lots are bad for the environment! Enough!
You should not destroy history. Keep &Preserve
History and beautiful homes need to be saved, not destroyed for a parking lot!
Burnham made such a fantastic contribution to architecture, the ability to study his work is crucial.
I appreciate beauty.
Needless waste of money. Temporary solution at the expense of losing significant historical properties.
This is a historicly important home. Why not change it into a museum admissions could benefit the school.
I’m sick of seeing history being erased.
Daniel Burnham is commonly referred to as the father of American urban planning. School employees should be encouraged to commute by walking, biking, taking the the bus, and car pooling. Safe Routes to School programs (walk/bike to school) are growing across the country.
Stop tearing down historical buildings! Find another solution to your real estate problems.
Expansion of a parking lot should not be a reason to demolish a historic structure.
Really? Like there isn’t enough spare land with buildings of no consequence that can be sacrificed for parking in Champaign Urbana Illinois? When are people going to realize that some things are more important than the convenience of parking a car?
Mary Margaret Collins
To save the house from demo!
History comes in all forms, and this is one of the most important.
There is no need to demolish this beautiful house for the sake of 25 parking spaces. The community will be extremely sorry if this goes ahead. Please do not destroy this house!!
I hope you find another solution for parking, just not this one.
History should be preserved, not destroyed.
Getting rid of a beautiful place that brings history to our new generations to make a parking lot is completely not fair.
What is wrong with these people!?
It’s the right thing to do!
This is an important work of architecture, condemned to a disgraceful demolition.
Preserving the right legacies are important! Champagne can do with ine less parking lot!
Beautiful landmarks should be saved
I think it is a disgrace to demolish a historic building for a parking lot.
Historic preservation is an essential part of our landscape and heritage. When alternatives exist they deserve to be explored.
This is a historically significant building and destroying it would be beyond idiotic for several reasons including potential profits.
This is outrageous, certainly they can use this beautiful building for something rather than tear down for parking lot.
It is important to keep historical landmarks
I believe it is important to save historic buildings.
It's a beautiful historic building that should be preserved for future generations.
This is more than a historic house, it needs to be respected for what it is, a beautiful landmark for generations to come.
Historical preservation is important!
I hate to see historical properties torn down.
History doesn't always need to be torn down.
Historic buildings should not be torn down!
this is historic building.
It would be a tragedy for the community to lose this historic home for a parking lot! The beauty and elegance of this home bring pride and hot to the city
I want the The Historic Burnham House saved from being demolished. Save The Burnham House Please!!!
This building should be preserved!
I value history.
I believe you can find another place to put a parking lot. I attended Central when there was no parking at all for students. There are plenty of newer buildings that can be used for a parking lot.
You don't demolish History, you re-purpose it. Shame on them!
We need to preserve our landmarks! If the school is going to be moving in the near future then why tear it down?
History should never be replaced with a parking lot. Please don't demolish this beautiful home.
Beautiful old houses like this should not be torn down in the name of "progress". Find another place for the school. There are certainly more lots with houses that look like they're ready to fall down in the city.
I believe in preserving the historical building in Champaign-Urbana. I was a student and do not want the area to lose its original feel. So much has already changed in campustown.
I am a huge fan of the work of Daniel Burnham
People need to stop destroying the beautiful things
We have to embrace and appreciate history. Not destroy it.
I live in a city where people had the foresight to save historic buildings, and this is a beautiful, historic building that cannot be replaced.
For the love of God, it's a Burnham house. Please don't be so short-sighted.
Such a beautiful structure!
It’s ridiculous to even considering demolishing this beautiful structure. Thanks for doing this and good luck with preservation in Illinois. Hope it’s better than Detroit Mich.
So tired of people destroying our history for a parking lot? Are you kidding me?
Too many unique and outstanding buildings by iconic architects have been demolished in the United States. We need to save and revere these buildings as part of our nation's artistic heritage.
Save Champaign history!
This is sn historically significant house. Save it!
As a Champaign native, I’m saddened and to think that the city would allow such beautiful piece of history be laid waste for a meaningless slab of pavement. Disheartening and shameful.
you guys have done well with the Ransom Gillis House!!! its absolutely beautiful
We should keep and appreciate history
parking lots can be moved, we only get one chance to get this one right!
because there's a better way to go. Figure out a better way.
it's a beautiful, historical building!
Burnham lived in Evanston. There are precious few of his residences extant. It would be a travesty to demolish this building.
I am signing this petition because I have respect for history...Apparently the school board need some education..
Keep the building with its history.
Having lived in Urbana, I have a connection to the community. I do NOT support demolishing this significant home. Either move the house or, preferably, move your parking lot!
Historic preservation
Daniel Burnham was a visionary and his works should be preserved. An asphalt parking lot? That’s an insult and makes Champaign indistinguishable from many other towns. You have something special. Take care of it!
Parker family
I went to school in Champaign and I believe that great houses should stand. No need to park cars should preclude that.
Historic homes can never be replaced.
I love historical architecture and Burnham.
Waste is wrong. Waste of such a distinguished building is abhorrent.
I always try to support important causes, and this is one of them!
Demolishing this house will be a blight on the history of Champaign. Parking can be located anywhere. For the sake of decency, spare this house and find a way to incorporate it into redevelopment plans.
It’s history worth saving
I appreciate historical homes.
Burnham is an important architect for Illinois.
There are many insignificant buildings nearby that could be used as parking, if the school board thinks they should encourage students to drive to high school.
I'm signing because our historic architecture is a precious and finite resource that shouldn't be cast aside just for temporary convenience.
This is a historical building and should be preserved.
No amount of money can replace this building. This is our heritage, which can never be replaced.
Historical houses like this should be preserved not torn down
Architectural preservation is MORE important than a parking lot!
Short-sighted decisions like this are destroying the architectural legacy of our communities. Once these beautiful buildings come down, they are lost forever.
I'm signing because historical preservation is far more important than a parking lot. This beautiful property should be maintained and used by the school district or sold to a non-profit group or individual/group for maintenance.
A historic home can’t speak for itself.
This is part of our community and should be kept. History!
I support the preservation of historical sites
It is a masterpiece. Do not tear this down.
Historical properties are an integral part of every cities history.
This home is an historic landmark in our community and needs to be saved.
The U.S. is losing our history & heritage for no good reason.
You cant recreate history!
preserving history is more important than a parking lot.
Why do we always have to destroy something beautiful and historically important for an over priced apartment complex or a parking lot or garage. Can't we for once cherish the history and beauty
Definitely need to save this historical Burnham house !!
I went to High School and univeristy in Champaign-Urbana. I remember driving to simply view this home in the Fall. Majestic.
I completely agree.
...it's vital that a community honor and respect its past history and those people who made it so special.
Keeping historical places help to preserve memory and cities identities.
This building is a piece of architectural history.
Destroying this home for 25 parking places is an illogical, short-sighted, and near criminal travesty.
Historical structures are important to preserve for the history & character of a community!I live in rural Danville, IL(Not Plano)
too beautiful to destroy..
I love that house.
History should be preserved and this is a jewel.
I love this house
Preserve this gorgeous piece of history!
History cannot be replaced. Please don't trade beauty for blight.
Preserving Historic architecture allows the opportunity to transfer knowledge from one generation to another, creating a valuable teaching tool for future learners and leaders.
Preserve why little history we have! Who needs another parking lot??
Keep your heritage!! You can never replace it!
Reckless choice school board. Make a plan and save these properties.
I love these "old" buildings; the history they represent, the architecture, the grandeur & reminder of what life used to be. There is such beauty it takes one's breath away!
Please don't tear down this historic landmark and replace it with an ugly asphalt parking lot for the space of only 25 cars! It's too beautiful a property. It should remain an amazing house for generations to admire
Of its historical significance.
Never demo history for a parking lot!
Daniel Burnham is essential to the legacy of architecture in the United States. Preserve this home in any way possible.
I love gorgeous old homes and the historical significance.
I'm signing because I'd rather see a historic house preserved than an unnecessary parking lot built.
Historic buildings should be preserved. It’s that simple.
History should never be demolished for a parking lot.
History and beauty matter to our communities!
Grand old homes have a purpose in our lives, for us to share with our ancestors fine woodwork, interesting architecture and beauty. It would be a travesty to demolish this lovely home.
It’s our history
Save
Historic homes are too rare to demolish! Beauty is a treasure to preserve especially with population growth.
This is such a beautiful historic home. Tear it down for a parking lot? Outrageous! I was in a CHS class of well I was in a CHS of over 600 students. We managed to find parking spots why can't students today do the same?
this matters.
Houses like this preserve the history of Champaign
Once something is gone, you can't bring it back. For a parking lot? Seriously?
Buildings are as much of our history as text books
We can’t destroy beautiful things
For a parking lot? What are they thinking?
Please preserve our architectural heritage!
I am a wannabe househugger!
The joy and beauty of Lake Forest is it’s history and charm. Please do not ruin it
I was born and raised in Champaign and I believe that something of this kind of historical value should be saved at all costs!!
Old historic homes should be saved
Keep the History, no more parking lots!
WE NEED TO PRESERVE HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE! WE CAN'T GET IT BACK ONCE IT'S GONE!
This is happening way to often. Lets stop this
I love beautiful architecture! Once it's gone there is no getting it back.
It's Daniel Burnham!!!
This home brings enormous value, in every sense of that word, to the community. Why would you want to lose an essential piece of your town?
It's a beautiful historic site, stop destroying the attractive parts of our town for parking lots!
Historical property
i work in Champaign and went to college there and appreciate history. don't tear this piece of history down
I never want to see such a fabulous house torn down
Historical House..let’s save it!
Enough with the parking lots and high-rises. We need links to our past and historic buildings are one way to maintain that connection. So ridiculous, tearing down a beautiful structure like this to replace it with a flat, ugly...nothing.
You would think Champaign would be more thoughtful about preservation of its historic landmarks. For a parking lot? Seriously?
DUH this house is gorgeous and needs to be saved!
It is a beautiful house and should not be demolished for a flipping parking lot! I could understand if it was in disrepair but it isnt. It is still beautiful as ever!
The Burnham house is an important historic and cultural asset that should be protected for future generations.
why do they want to destroy the history of the towns all the time so sad
Once a historic home is torn down, it is gone forever. Homes like this lend character to a town.
Keep what is a beautiful testament to our collective history!
I'm signing because we need to preserve historic architectural structures such as this one.
I want to help
I grew up about a block away the Burham house. It seems unique
We lose site of some history if this is destroyed.
It's important to preserve history while providing progress. Explore other options.
This house is a beautiful artitectucall hope for our future children.
It is a very historic home!!!
History matters
This is history. Why take it down. A parking garage lot!!!! Really!!! Going to put a fast food or bank around it!!!
I have grandchildren that live in Champaign area, they have been Illini since their 1st tailgate as babes in blue and orange. I love and appreciate true craftswomanship. Said once... I'll say it again..."You don't know what you've got til it's gone.....". Please don't pave a piece of paradise within Champaign. Thank you, Rebecca Noonan
A mattress store too! Boo Hoo!!
You cannot replace this part of our great history! DO NOT MOW IT DOWN FOR ANYTHING. . .let alone a PARKING LOT!! What nerve they have got! :^(
Parking lots can be made another place; don't destroy this beautiful historically significant home!!
This is a historic place and needs to be preserved.
I love the history behind the House
Why not
Historical buildings should be preserved.
This home is beautiful and historical. 25 parking spaces isn't beautiful or making history!
Don’t let history slip away
It's historical!
I believe in saving historic sites.
It needs to stay. American historic sites needs to be appreciated
That extraordinary building should be preserved. It could have a useful life as a B and B and deserves a stay of demolition.
I want Burnham’s buildings to be preserved.
Save American history!
History is important, it helps us learn how to live in the present while appreciating the past.
Why would someone destroy such a beautiful place? Save our history!!!
It’s a work of art and part of the beauty of Champaign!
This how’s is important to me because it is a historical landmark.
This would be cultural loss.
Move the school.
Champaign school district, don't destroy history!
Save all of them
I felt compelled to save a piece of history.
I have a sense of history
This is a historically significant building. A parking lot could easily be built in another spot in the area.
We need to preserve our history.
They've torn down enough beautiful old house in Champaign Urbana.
It's history and history belongs here.
Champaign needs to keep some of its history for a change.
This is a great place, and it needs to remain open!
I’m signing because I believe historical preservation of buildings is important to the community. This building is beautiful and as it has significant historical importance, should be saved.
A school district should never erase history. If they do, it is the beginning of the end. Educate about history, not destroy it for parking.
It’s a beautiful place that needs restored and repurposed.
Preservation is important, and this place matters!
Tearing down beautiful and valuable old buildings is not an acceptable way to make room for new ones.
Seriously!!!? Can we preserve this historical beauty???
"They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot."
I believe in preserving history
Is this the legacy we want to leave our future generations with? A PARKING LOT?
This old mansion is such a valued example of the history of our town. It should be saved
These two homes are significant and rare examples of world-renowned architects. Once destroyed they cannot be replaced, and it would be a black mark on the name of Champaign forever. Parking lots ugly and are replaceable and moveable, this is unique and beautiful and irreplaceable.
I am so sick of our architectural heritage being destroyed.;
Leave it alone! There are many golf courses that the city could build a new school on.
Historical preservation is important. It would be a shame to lose this great piece of architecture.
I am an architect, a historic preservationist, lover of craft, fine detailing, and the legacy of Daniel Burnham. I also graduated from U Of IL and think Champaign can not afford to loose a historic building.
This is a travesty!!!
We need to save the old buildings for the future and show the history of the country
history is important. Respect for the history of the land is important. You need to start somewhere.
We must save our historic buildings
It is to beautiful and important to just tear down.
We need to preserve our beautiful history.
20 year resident of Champaign-Urbana. There are a few Burnham homes left. 25 years ago, there were 10 Louis Sullivan homes. Now there are none. Let’s not have that happen to Burnham. Burnham also is the father of the modern department store prototype in the Marshall field and Company building on State Street in Chicago. He is also the architect of Selfridges London, Filene’s of Boston, gimbals of New York City, and want to makers of Philadelphia. Champaign is fortunate to have this building right adjacent to the school. There are plenty of other options for parking. Don’t let the city of champagne get away it’s a world-class heritage.
Why would we destroy a building designed by Burnham? No one would consider doing this to a Wright or Sullivan building!
Come on Illini cronies, this is worth saving!
A parking lot instead of the Burnham house seems utterly insane.
It’s a historic treasure.
Explore other options. It's a piece of history that cannot be replaced.
We need to save these beautiful historical homes, NOT destroy them!
History like this should not become a parking lot!
Keep this building and so 1 or many of our history lives on.
Education is limited without history and people learn in many different ways. Having a historical landmark to use for future education makes sense.
Bad form. Don't be a bunch of drinks. Historical landmark ON school property. It's a field trip without permission slips. Stop it.
Done!
History is worth saving!
Once you destroy history you can never get it back! This house is a story, a patch in the quilt of our culture.
Wow. Demoliish a beautiful historic building for Parking? SMH.
Save it!!!!!
Too many parking lots.
History is important and parking lots make cities ugly. Find another way.
Let's not erase our history and significant architectural property.
Historic preservation is important to our knowledge of who we are!
This house should not be destroyed.
History is something to always treasure. Not only for everyone to look and learn from it, but also our children and our children’s children.
This is a significant architectural building and shouldn't be razed for 25 parking places. Worth so much more than that
I believe in historic preservation. It has cultural value that cannot be measured in dollars, yet, it has economic impact by defining a sense of place.
Stop this demolition!
I love to save old buildings
do not destroy this Historic house
The beauty and care of an architecturally significant structure such as this cannot be replaced. Tear this down and the future will reflect on that decision with dismay.
I'm signing because a parking lot is NOT more valuable than history.
We re losing too many of these lovely historical architectural masterpieces.
This is historic. Must be saved
Historic homes should be preserved for the future, not leveled for a parking lot.
This Historic house does not need to become a parking lot!!
Once homes of this grandeur are gone, they are gone forever. If the future is self driving cars, a parking lots will be obsolete - think long term - not “need of the moment.”
This house has architectural significance and should not be destroyed for any reason, most of all a parking lot! Whose idea was that?
As I play Harry Selfridge and have an interest in all things related to any connection
It’s crazy to tear down a beautiful historical place
The idea of demolishing this handsome, historical home is so irresponsible it is practically unbelievable. Please keep this part of architectural history and find a constructive use for the structure.
It baffles the mind how an educational institution could tear down such a uniquely beautiful and historically relevant building. Just think about what it is you are teaching young people and everybody else. The destruction of such an important landmark only to replace it with a parking lot?!?! Plain and utter stupidity is what that would be.
This building is a state and national treasure. Don’t sacrifice the permanent on the alter of the temporary.
Historical buildings should preserved!
Don't destroy history
Historical buildings are important to the community and the future. We need to have these buildings to teach our children what it was like in the past.
History is important, that means all of it, good, bad, and ugly. I know for a fact not everyone shares that viewpoint but there is good to learning history too so let's preserve this house and continue teaching our local history in addition to the "big, important stuff"
Historic properties need to be preserved and celebrated —once it is gone, it is gone. For a parking lot—how short sighted can people be especially considering the caliber of intelligent individuals that live in the area.
This is a lovely building with great historical significance. Please reconsider destroying this structure. Champaign is fortunate to have it and should do a to protect it.
Why ..really ..another parking lot ...assholes
I mean, isn't it obvious?
I am from Tuscola, Il and I feel we need to preserve the History of f the state as well as the country.
Just don’t demolish it, leave it for its historic value.
For the love of architecture.....Please sign.
I believe in the preservation of historically significant places.
Save this historic home. The world does not need any more parking lots.
The house is a part of history and should be preserved.
We should save beautiful, historic real estate.
I believe in preserving our history and beautiful reminders of the past
WE need to save our architectural history!
Save all the houses.
That is way more beautiful than a parking lot!
History MUST be preserved in EVERY way possible and such a glorious building such as Burnham House is certainly one.
It’s a sin to destroy art!
I dont want this home torn down.
I grew up in Urbana and now live in Colorado Springs where a world class opera house was demolished for a bank parking lot. These well made old buildings are irreplaceable. Could it be used for school offices? With a modest parking lot in the yard? Once these treasures are gone they can never be recovered.
Preserving "history" is of utmost importance. History belongs to us all.
I’m supporting a friend who is a good hearted person and if she believes in this cause I do too.
Historic architecture is MUCH more important than a parking lot.
I agree
Our history is our heritage and shouldn't be tampered with. (Monuments should be back where they rightfully belong.
I live in California now, but l grew up in Illinois
How can anyone think tearing down this beautiful mansion for a parking lot is a good thing to do? what will transportation even be like in 25 years?
#thisplacematters
This isn't true progress. We need to remember how things used to be.
Stop getting rid of Historical Landmarks. Save this House!
The house is worthy of presentation on several grounds: first as a work of a preeminent American architect who was profoundly influencing on the course on American architecture at the turn of the century; second as one of very few residential works that survive by Burnham, and this house shares visual characteristics with one house in Chicago and one in Oak Park which both have local protection already in place; and third, as a great example of Queen Anne architecture and probably one of Champaign's best examples. The proposed use: a parking lot, which could easily be accommodated somewhere else does not justify the destruction of the historic property.
Stop destroying American history...any real American wouldn't even consider taking this down....its a sin against the rest of us...
Once you destroy history, you can't bring it back. Save this house.
Come on Champagne, you're such a quaint town, don't you recognize what a treasure you possess? Preserve those historic landmarks!
History should be preserved, not forgotten and thrown away, just because you can do something, doesnt mean you should.
I grew up in C-U and it pains me everytime I go back to see how much of our heritage has been lost to progress. Please keep this significant home.
It important to our heritage to keep buildings of great historical import for our future generations. 25 parking places is a poor excuse for destroying our history!!!
Destroying vernacular architecture for a surface lot is shit
We need to save historical properties
Way TOO many historical buildings are destroyed for “progress”. KEEP the mansion alive!
Art and architecture and history are important to a society.
This old historic home is to beautiful and historical to tear down for a parking lot so people don’t have to walk as far SMDH
America needs to save historical sites for future generations to enjoy and visualize our past
A parking lot?!! Too many historical sites have been razed for no good purpose. This would absolutely be another & once it’s gone ... it’s gone. Please SAVE this home for future generations. Thank You
Part of history and is so beautiful..
We can not tear down history for convenience
IT IS LOVELY
A parking lot? No
This house has historic significance. We can’t tear down all of history
Enough!
I value historically significant architecture.
We need to stop tearing down our beautiful history
It’s part of our history.
It is not only a work of art, but one of quality craftsmanship. Too many others have been destroyed. A shame. If someone/some corporation is wanting to destroy it, there must be money going into some selfish human beings pocket(s).
It’s history & magnificence needs to be saved!
The works of Daniel Burnham must be preserved. There are too few left.
History
I'm signing this because history should be preserved not demolished.
This beautiful building means more than a parking lot.
All historic buildings need to be preserved!
Architecture cannot be and should not be replaced with parking lots!
Please, please, please don’t destroy such a beautiful and historic home for a parking lot. This brings so much more value to the city than a parking lot.
This house should be saved
Completely asinine that this kind of thing is still happening. These are the kinds of foolish mistakes we made 50 years ago, that we are now paying for and wishing we could undo. How wasteful, destructive, and wholly avoidable.
Isn’t the trump doing enough to ruin our country? Show that our legacies mean something.
Save--to many historical place are being torn down
This gorgeous, historic house must be saved!
Burnham & Root were incredibly important architects and this house is one of the few remaining works by them. Don’t let them turn this beautiful house into a parking lot. It should be a city landmark.
Destroying these buildings for a parking lot is criminal. Part of a good education is learning a respect for the past, architecture, cultural heritage, and a pride of place, that you won't be getting from a parking lot.
Keep history alive!!!
This house is too lovely and unique to be demolished. Find another place for your parking lot. If buildings continue to be taken down for parking lots, why will we need a place to park? There won’t be any buildings left, to get out of our cars to visit!
Please save this home!
This building is historically relevant, important and beautiful. Leave it alone.
Don't pave parasdise and put up a parking lot. How backward can that possibly be? This is the 21st century, we should be respecting our heritage, not destroying it for 20th century ideas of what is important.
We need to stop destroying these beautiful places!
This is nothing short of obscene. From Burnham & Root through D.H. Burnham & Co. and beyond the firms legacy is rivaled by few and surpassed by but a handful. These people call themselves educators? To symbolically perpetuate the culture of the smelly little four wheeled box with yet another block of blacktop in the age climate change is blissful ignorance. Stop the madness, at all levels great & small.
Do not do this.
It's a unique building and adds immensely to our heritage. We must not allow it to be demolished to make way for a parking lot. Sad that one has to petition for this.
To tear something down just because is insane. Y’all don’t want the beautiful and historic building? Move it to another location.
We can come to a better solution rather than tearing the house down.
History shouldn’t be destroyed for yet another un needed parking lot...really??
I’m tired of watching history get paved over.
Well said!
This property is worth saving!
Stop destroying gorgeous historical sites!!!
Beautiful work by an important architectural team. Alternatives to a senseless public-funded demolition must be found.
Architecturally significant buildings must be preserved.
Do not destroy this beautiful building!
I live in a historic home - built in 1896 - love history - save our historic homes!
This historic site should be honored.
The past informs our future. They don't build things like they once did. Important architect. Important building. Let's save it for our children and the architect's and contractors of the future.
This is important to me
This is one of Champaign's treasured landmark and a beloved jewel of our near west side!!
How absolutely sad and disrespectful to our history!! Save this house!!
The United States has a relatively short architectural history, which is all the more readon to treat our landmark buildings with care.
This is a historic landmark and should be protected.
Stop demolishing history!!
This house is beautiful and little effort has been made to find alternatives to demolition.
This building should be saved! The fact that demolishing it is even a consideration is absurd!!
I believe in conserving historic buildings, and not supporting parking lots.
I love historic homes. Let our children see them too
Enough parking lots. Save our historic buildings.
I believe this house should be saved it is Obviously a very historical piece of American history that needs to be preserved for future Generations.
We can't erase Chicago's past from history. SIGN!!!
A parking lot ?!? So short sighted. Reduce Cars not historic structures ! We NEED artifacts in our communities that represent high achievements of endeavor.
No they should not tear down this beautiful home and piece of history for a parking lot
Do not demolish this historically significant building!
Historical places should be saved. Too much history is lost when places like this are removed from existence.
This house is a piece of history!! Do not destroy it, it’s so wrong!!!!
Save our architectural heritage. Do not be foolish and spend our cultural assets on a parking lot!
Saving this historic building is the right thing to do!
We destroy our history too often.
Wow - really?!?
We need to protect our history and landmarks to prevent the rewriting of history in a time where whata truth is is being questioned
Historic architecture should be preserved
We don't need another parking lot. Build a parking deck somewhere else.
We don't need another parking lot
Cause momma bug said so ❤️
We need to SAVE OUR HISTORY...!!
Please save this beautiful part of history!!
It's important to Paul Bertsche
Buildings of historic significance need to be treated with respect, not demolished for a parking lot.
This needs to be saved.....parking lots are a dime a dozen, beautiful historical homes are not!!
Irreplaceable and historic example of Chicago’s proud architectural tradition and heritage! If it cannot be retained at this site, require it to be moved to a new and suitable location. Entirely possible, technically!
It is all about history and where we all come from. It is a connection to the past that propel us all forward and extending that pause of why we are her.
Preserve this home, please.
There are very few historical places left in Illinois.
I moved to the Midwest to live in an area of architectural treasures. Daniel Burnham was a genius. This would be an enormous cultural loss. I cannot even believe it is being contemplated. Once we destroy our heritage, it is irretrievably gone and we are the lesser for it.
It's important to save historic homes like this that are irreplaceable. It is a significant example of midwestern architecture.
Our history needs to be preserved.. it’s disappearing at an alarming rate and it needs to stop.
I'm from lombard
We need to preserve our historic if buildings.
We most end the destruction of such important historical landmarks.
I believe in saving/preserving architecturally significant buildings
Historic buildings should be preserved! Champaign don’t be short-sighted and lose this iconic architectural history and local homage to the Burnhams.
Can't bare the thought that this significant and beautiful building will be demolished just to provide parking- which probably won't be needed in 20 more years.
Don't remove history!
This is a beautiful home and we must cherish our history!
Historical significance
I don’t want this residential home to be a parking lot.
Historically significant work and building of this nature is an asset to the community, and hence needs preservation and not demolition. My opinion is based on this letter and i have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the contents!
This home has great historical value.
This house was designed by a historical icon of Chicago’s history. That it would be leveled for a parking lot is a slap in the face of Chicago’s heritage.
The home is beautiful and history!
History needs to be preserved
I visited New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. I loved driving throu several towns and lookingai the tun of 20th century homes. They’re fast disappearing in the Midwest.
who the hell needs more parking lots!
homes like this will not be built again, It's grace and architecture should be preserved.
We need to preserve history and historical houses
Historically significant buildings s are irreplaceable!
It would be more useful to use this property as offices or school clubs. It is in good structural condition. Please do not destroy it. Thank you.
We must not loose history.
Beautiful home. Please don't demolish.
History needs to be preserved!
No one needs ANOTHER parking lot.
We need to keep History
Preserve our architectural history
Please find another use for this beautiful historic building - don’t tear it down for a parking lot!
I am all for preservation, save it before it’s gone
What a beautiful structure with a rich history! Hope this art can be saved!
save the past. Significant structures are more important than parking.
School schould NOT be torn down for parking.
I am a native Evanstonian and grew up living across the street from where Daniel Burnham lived and attended a school designed by him. I am sure this helped spark my interest historic architecture ultimately resulting in my obtaining an MFA in Historic Preservation. The Champaign School Board should save this significant home! I truly believe historic preservation can be a powerful economic engine which has cultural, educational, environmental, and social benefits.
Find a WAY to keep and restore this historically IMPORTANT BUILDING. Make it a Community Project.
It's wrong!!
Because it is a historical property and I don't believe this should happen.
Because I believe we should have some historical preservation present in our town.
As a Champaign County native, I am proud of our architectural heritage, and think this building should be kept and used as the asset it is!
Champaign .. Burnham born, this is all that's left!
We need to protect these beautiful, historical places!
It’s important to preserve history.
We don't need more asphalt!
History is importsnt
There must be a better way.
This is a rare and vital example of an American architect's work. The house provides a broad context for the father of highrises in the United States.
I lived in the beautiful city of Champaign, and I think it’s important to preserve architectural history for future generations.
It's history
A historical building is more important than a parking lot!! Get creative and find a way to preserve the past to inform the future!!
I Love old houses !
Why would you destroy a beautiful place to put up a parking lot?? REALLY??? No way. What about the homeless people? Turn it into a shelter for people that need a warm place to stay!! Don't destroy it!!
What a thorough account of why this building should be preserved!
This building is an very important piece of architecture that tells the story of your community. If demolished, you destroy the historical fabric of this story. We encourage you to have a moral compass and save this gem.
Very well outlined. I see absolutely no reason why the Board should demolish this building. Building a multilevel garage around the existing parking area makes a lot more sense.
Historic and architectural preservation is important!
This is a part of international culture and should be conserved for future generations
We’ve lost too much of our architectural history, don’t let this be another loss!! Save the Burnham House!
Historical properties need to be preserved, not demolished. There are other alternatives for this house that need to be considered
Too beautiful to destroy
Save history
Historic architecture matters!
This is a beautiful & historic home that must be preserved!
There is no reason to demolish this place
Historic beauty can never be replaced
Shame on you for wanting to get rid of this beautiful historical home! Stop!!@
Burnham’s significance in American architecture means there is surely some alternative in this scenario that does not entail demolition of the existing structure.
Too much history is being destroyed or hidden away in our country. Historical buildings are a window into our past.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? History means nothing? You seriously can't figure out a more viable and less history distroyng place to put a freaking PARKING LOT!!!!??
I believe new is not always better. Our history is important. Parking lots we have too many of. How does a parking lot make things better.
Maintaining historical properties are vital to our cultural heritage & the charm of towns.
Historical buildings are a part of the cultural fabric of a community and should be saved. There are other ways to find parking spaces.
History, how could you even consider a parking lot over this historic building.
Please save our heritage
We can not keep distroying our history
This is a beautiful historic home, not a McMansion., by a well known architect. It should be preserved.
Because it is tragic that America views historical architecture as disposable.
We can't keep eracing history!!!!!!!
Keeping history alive is very important, for our present and our future. As a former Illinois resident I am dismayed that the School Board would have so little interest in Preserving the history of the town and this beautiful and rare gem. I town that has lost it's sense of place has given up on it's future, I encourage all to stop and think about the value of what you are considering throwing away.
This house is rare & part of American history; should be preserved. Find another option for parking! Priorities should reflect Values
The house is part of our heritage and such a thin of beauty.
Champaign can be well served, serving the academic community as well as the community at large by preserving Burnham House. Surely there must be other sites more suitable for a car lot.
The Burnham house is a part of our History!
Too many old buildings in excellent condition are destroyed simply for modern ones.
Tearing down an important part of history would be sinful. For a parking lot? Please, NO!
I believe that preserving our past is more important than the expanding the parking facilities for a short term fix. Encourage car pooling or other alternative transportation. Charge for the parking privilege or give bonuses to those who car pool.
This house needs to be preserved
some historic buildings we need to keep.
Parking lots are not as important as our cultural history!
It is important to save this historic house. Architecturally and structurely it is true that they don’t build them like they used to. This house should be used as an example of great craftsmanship.
The destruction of historic buildings, especially ones that are in perfect condition has to stop!
We need to preserve our history instead of destroying it.
This is a historical landmark and should be preserved!!
Beautiful work of art.
Save historical building
I want it to stay there.
Enough of demolishing HISTORIC LANDMARKS to lay asphalt parking lots
save our heritage this home would be a wonderful cultural center. The craftsmanship alone is worth saving. Do not tear this lovely home for a parking lot.
Keep history alive!
Save this and make it an asset - once gone it xannot be undone
Saving the past, guarantees the future.
It's a beautiful historic landmark
Think twice before you demolish! You can't put back historic buildings.
This building is significant
A beautiful historic building.
Daniel was a legendary visionary and architect, responsible for the grand plan of Chicago and the beauty of my city. You CANNOT disgrace his legacy like this!!
This should not be Destroyed
Too much of our local history has already been thoughtlessly disposed of and disregarded. It's important to remember where we're from and where we've been to help guide where we're going.
Keep our history—our architectural legacy needs to be protected and passed down.
I grew up in Champaign, IL. We should save this important piece of local history!
I believe in saving historically significant houses.
Because history should be preserved over greed... it's shameful the school board is doing that. They of all people should respect and appreciate history considering that they are supposedly Educators that care about the education in history of the people that they pretend to serve.
We in Murray are struggling to save our historic structure from mindless development as well. Good luck with your effort
Obvious.
We need to preserve our historic architecture!
Historical preservation
There are enough parking lots, for crying out loud. Do not erase history for parking lots. That is as insane as allowing fracking in our National Parks. Oh, wait....um...yeah!
Historic houses are worth saving!!
Daniel Burnham is one of my favorite architects and this outstanding example of his work needs to be preserved. Demolition means gone forever.
Historic buildings are more important to our life and health than parking lots. Every kid doesn't need a car
I enjoy looking at historic architecture when I vacation
These historical landmarks should be preserved. We enjoy looking at these beautiful old homes.
Historic buildings should be saved not demolished for a parking lot
Preservation is a part of our who we are, as a culture and society.
I grew up in IL & these amazing structures need to be preserved.
History matters!
History & Historic Homes are very important
Need to protect our historic buildings
We need to preserve all Burnham designed buildings.
I believe it would be wrong to destroy a historical home like this one.Julie Davis, Paola
That's a beautiful historical home that should be kept not destroyed!!!
What poor history and architecture lessons the school board is teaching! Move the house if you have to have a parking lot. How about investing in a parking garage for one of your current parking lots?
I live in Decatur, IL. a city that is known for demolishing its history. I don't want to see Champaign join the trend!
history matters
We are destroying history all the time. Maybe we should stop.
I remember admiring this beautiful house when we lived in Champaign. It should be preserved. To even think of tearing it down to make a parking lot is shameful.
History bitch
A parking lot for designated parking, really? Used 9 months a year that adds no cultural value to the community. I’m thinking the teachers need to catch a school bus.
Don't destroy history for parking spaces!! Also please don't clear any natural landscapes. Maybe tear down a strip mall? I don't know what's around there.
I care
I understand the importance of preserving historical buildings.
Please save historical landmarks!
Our history needs preserved. Once it’s gone, it’s not coming back.
Such a beautiful part of History.. Save
You cannot replace this beautiful treasure. You can a parking lot. Seriously find an alternative plan for the parking. It can be done without distroying history.
I’m tired of our architectural history being destroyed in the name of progress. Shame on those that think there are good reasons for these travesties!
It would be tragic to destroy this beautiful old home!
Please save this very important historic resource!
Can't believe that it could be demolished! Please save this building.
I am a former (and perhaps a future, again) resident of Glen Ellen/Sonoma and that house is irreplaceable.
I'm signing because we have to keep some sense of our history. That this beautiful house would be demolished for a parking lot is amazing in the worst possible sense. U of I at Chicago grad.
She’s my aunt
Thanks for that. At least you have a nice lake!
Too many irreplaceable properties are destroyed.
Daniel Burnham is one of the United States best architects!
I think beautiful and historically important things should be saved. There's lots of places to put parking lots
Preserving our historical homes is important.
i think all historic places should be honored and kept up
History meeds to be preserved!!!!!
I read this article and agree that historic preservation is important. I think it's beyond sad that such a fine piece of architecture can be destroyed to create a parking lot!
It's the right thing to do! Save our legacies!
Once an historic structure is destroyed, it can not be replaced.
It is thoughtless and se;foshj to not preserve a building of Historic value. Especially when there are other options.
I already signed earlier in the week. If i sign again i am afraid it will void my signature.
Parking lots are NOT beautiful. Students need beauty in their lives.
Entering the age of autonomous cars ... soon we won't need as many parking lots. But it will be too late to get back our beautiful, historic buildings. I still regret the tragic 1987 demolition of Paul Rudolph's Christian Science Building, which once stood on the corner of E. Gregory and S. 4th St, to make way for an apartment building that has no architectural merit whatsoever.http://prudolph.lib.umassd.edu/node/3891A slap in the face to the students attending the University's reputable School of Architecture.
We need to preserve our architectural heritage. What an excuse to use this space for lazy teachers and students to park their cars"
I used to live in Champaign IL, and with all amazing things that are happening in this great town, even considering to demolish this home is a complete disgrace. Shame on those that came up with such horrific idea!
We need to save and restore solid older buildings!
Save tbis historic house
Parking lots do nothing to enrich our lives.
It is unethical to demolish this building in haste before the high school extension plans are even finalized. The home is historically significant due to its very famous architect. To demolish it would be to deprive the neighborhood of a significant historic resource.
We own a historic farm near Champaign, IL and believe there are too many historic structures in that area of the country being destroyed. Please save this beautiful home!
It is just simply preposterous to tear down such an amazing historical home. There is plenty of raw land to build a parking lot on.
I lived in an apartment in this historic house from 1999-2001. I have so many wonderful memories associated with this beautiful building. And all the while I had no idea it was a Burnham! Those memories are even more special now. We must preserve this historic structure - an iconic landmark in Champaign, IL.
This home should be developed into an attraction, house museum, or other
History's buildings need to be preserved.
I hate to see a board, that knows NOTHING about architecture, destroy such an important part of history to gain a *?#% parking lot!!!
It is a horrible waste.... beautiful materials, well-crafted, lovely grounds, it’s history!!!
Please save this historic house.
I believe in preserving history.
Historic buildings cannot be replaced.
Historical homes are inspiring to future Americans. Why not make the home part of the school! Or utilize the space in some other way. U of I has no interest in owning this place? Regret is all you'll have when you demolish this beautiful structure. Look at buildings built today! They have nothing even close to the quality you have there!
It's been nearly 20 years since I lived in Champaign, but I still fondly remember walking by this house and imagining myself living in such a grand, historical place! Please reconsider a decision to destroy an irreplaceable piece of history!
This is a beautiful piece of history that should be saved.
History must be preserved.
This is our architectural heritage and must be preserved - the fact that it is being threatened by the "need" for a new parking lot is an absolute disgrace.
It is an inappropriate and wasteful use of taxpayer funds to demolish such historic buildings.
All historic buildings should be saved
Trying to save a magnificent piece of history.
We need to stop tearing down beautiful historic homes just because it might be convenient to use the space they occupy.
Historic homes are a finite resource. To treat them as disposable pawns to the progress of our country is not only shortsighted, but threatens to erase the history and legacy which our country possesses. We need to be the stewards of our history today so that future generations may appreciate it tomorrow.
Tear down a 60’s box for parking- this is important architecturally , historically & for the community
This history is worth saving for us and future generations to enjoy-
Save all historic buildings!
I'm a firm believer in historic preservation!
Save the Burnham house in Champaign
We should be saving these historic buildings. This is our past. Do not destroy it!
This house should be on the national registry of historic buildings
We need to keep treasures like this!
Please don’t demolish
It would be a crime to destroy such a significant piece of our heritage. Please reconsider.
You are absolutely correct
Keep our history alive!
I'm signing this petition to save this beautiful house instead of demolishing it for a parking lot.More and more houses need saving.
This needs to be saved!
It would be an absolute disgrace if this house were demolished for a Parking! Lot! Haven't They ever heard of Joni Mitchell?!
Preservation over parking!
There seem better options for getting the school district's needs met than destroying a historic landmark with so many other practical uses.
The importance of historic homes
Instead of tearing down this grand piece of history for a parking lot, use it to teach students about the history, culture and architecture it represents. This is a very short-sighted, if not arrogant move on the part of anyone who claims to be an educator.
History beats asphalt.
This historic building is in good condition, and was, up until last year, still the home to several residents until the school board evicted them to make a parking lot.
I find it difficult to believe that this house could not be put to better use than to raze it for a parking lot. Seriously? A historic structure by a renowned 19th century architect is not worth saving and re-purposing? I'm sure there is plenty of open space in Champaign for a parking lot. It's not exactly Manhattan or another congested, lacking in space city. Please re-consider. . .
Parking lots don't matter - history does!!
This beautiful, historic home deserves to stay!!
For something this beautiful and significant to build a parking lot would be tantamount to chopping down a six hundred year old tree to replace it with a stop sign !
Save it!
We must stop destroying what is art!!
Once it is gone, you can never bring it back, and all you will have is a parking lot.
This is an important building that should be preserved for future generations.
Structures like this cannot be replaced once demolished.
I love Molly and she cares about this
Champaign is my hometown and keeping history is valuable.
i dont like to see Historic house tore down==just beautiful house
It would be a shame to lose a building of such historical value!
support
I value beautiful historical treasures
Keep our culture strong
It's a beautiful home, that could be a freaking parking lot.
It is the right action to take.
Burnham House is a beautiful structure that should be preserved!!
This a beautiful home. Please save it.
Don’t do this!
Once a landmark like this is gone, it's gone. Please look at ways to incorporate this history into your educational plan going forward rather than remove it from the horizon. Just giving your students and community the ongoing chance to encounter history in a living process rather than a book or virtually makes this worth saving. You don't need the parking spaces!
we need to save these historic buldings
We shouldn't destroy our history.
I don't even live here or know anything about this house, but I live in an area where historical houses are starting to be demolished. This house looks amazing and it would be sad if it was destroyed with its history.
I’m from Champaign and this is s historic piece of history to preserve not destroy
Like other cities, you will not learn what you have until you destroy it.
Save this incredible building
I wish Burnham Hospital had been saved.
This is an important historical home and should be saved even if needs to be relocated.
Growing up in Champaign, I walked past this gorgeous home nearly every day. It would be a tragedy to tear it down. It can never be replaced.
I believe in the validity in saving historicsl buildings.
I feel the architectural style and historic value of this building deserve preservation. I think the school district should turn it into an educational resource.
I love this house in my community and 25 parking spots don't merit it's demolition.
I believe we need to maintain/restore historic structures that remind us of our roots and values. Many are architecturally significant, providing real-life links to the styles and craftsmanship that brought us to where we are today. This certainly seems to be such a house.
I'm a Springfield, IL native so Champaign is my backyard neighbor from childhood. If all else fails can the house be moved to another location
I love the Burnham House! How shortsighted of them to want to tear down such a treasure!
These buildings should be preserved!
I am a former long time resident of Champaign. One of the things that makes Champaign a wonderful place is beautiful architecture like the Burnham home.
It's good to keep historical buildings that serve as a reminder for what good architecture represents.
Too much history is lost to parking lots. I’m assuming the house was built first.
I lived in Champaign - Urbana while my husband was a student. This is a beautiful house. One that should not be destroyed for a parking lot. Is this what we do with historic buildings?! Is this the respect you show to our history. Serious thought needs to be put into reconsidering this terrible decision.
This is so sad...
We need to keep this beautiful house from turning into parking lots.
Hate to see it go
It would be a travesty to destroy this historic home and turn it in to a parking lot for High School students. Please stop the madness. Please choose a better way.
We need to preserve our history!
I believe in preserving historical structures.
This is a piece of history that should be forever visited and maintained. Without Daniel Burnham Chicago would not be the amazing City it is today. Shame on anyone that wants to tear this landmark down!
It’s a beautiful home.
The lasting cultural value for preserving the Burnhak House building far outway the current plan to demolish it and render it as a parking lot. There are feasible alternatives that have identified but not taken into consideration. I urge local authorities to stop the planned demolition.
I think historic house are so interesting to keep slot of stories about them
WTF? You have to save the Burnham house! Are you kidding me?
We can't keep losing these incredible places!!
This piece of history should be preserved. Do not tear it down!
To save this historical home!
It's just one more link in the chain of our collective death of civilization. (Dickens)
Our history needs to be preserved not demolished so people can park.
its is a gorgeous house. who needs another parking lot.
I would love to see this house stay put since it is historic
Preserve history! No one will remember a parking lot.
Wow. You think you should tear down this historic house and create a parking lot. That says a lot about what kind of educators you are. Shame on you.
Are you kidding. A parking lot? This HISTORIC home? Come on people -
Do not destroy a landmark to build a parking lot!!!!!
The history of Champaign needs to STAY IN PLACE !! Leave this home WHERE IT IS!! Who needs another parking lot??? This home is the history or part of Champaign. These developers can go POUND SAND.
Historical icons should be preserved for posterity and learning opportunities.
I am signing because you can build a parking lot anywhere, but we need to keep item's from the past.
It is historic and deserves to be saved . Let the board members park on the lawn or down the street then walk the rest of the way,at least as far as the students are required to walk
This beautiful building is an important part of the unique character of our community, in both historical as well as esthetic context. Saving it will demonstrate values that should be witnessed by who live in or visit Champaign.
All reasonable effort and consideration should be made to repurpose this property. This magnificent structure may be inconvenient and need work, but our culture suffers when historic buildings are razed. Please consider all options and work intensely to find a way to say 'yes' to keeping this building!
This house deserves a chance to be saved. It is apart of Champaign's history. Its sad that places like these get torn down because of money hungry businesses.
I am a U of I grad and think historic C-U should be saved!!
It is important to save historical buildings.
It is offensive that nominally educated people ( school board) have no respect for the arts or history. What is that teaching the children? If they can’t except this responsibility then they need to have enough honor to let others assume it
This is part of history!
Memories should be preserved.
I love historical architecture...
A Burnham and Root is too valuable to demolish.
If the solution to parking is knocking a Daniel Burnham designed home, one of the most prominent contributors to architecture in turn of the century America. Then the parking situation has to be reviewed. Daniel Burnham contributed to the fabric of this state unlike few before him or after. For the the states top public university to place the parking of cars over the contributions to this state is just mid boggling.
A shining example of wasted taxpayers money instead of paying teachers a better salary.....
I’m signing because it shouldn’t be torn down because it’s an old house
We need to preserve our history and architecture
You cannot go tearing down history, especially for a few measly parking spaces. Shame on you Champaign!
“Make no little plans.” ~ Daniel Burnham
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
Historic old architecture is art. It would be like taking down the Mona Lisa for more wall space. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot! Boo.
Surely there must be a better alternative than destroying such a beautiful house for such a pedantic reason.
I grew up and went to School at Champaign High School. This house is a wonderfull part of Champaign history.
In American we tend to demolish our historical landmarks for the sake of “progress”. I doubt Champaign really needs another parking lot.
What a beautiful house! Of course I’m signing!
This is an important part of Champaign’s history.
Move the school location instead. This is part of the city's history.
It needs to remain in tact to preserve historical value. A shameful act to turn it into a parking lot.
This house and its history must be saved! Work with historians to preserve this treasure. You cannot say no and refuse to discuss!
Because this would be an outrage to destroy this beautiful Historic home to build a parking lot.
Historic buildings are critical to our history and our culture.
Save the History
Champaign seems intent on destroying what little architectural heritage it still has...meanwhile, approving bland, utterly disposable towers to be built around campus. Champaign will regret these poor urban planning choices.
history matters!
Once they are gone the are irreplaceable. Preserve our history.
Stop the destruction of our architectural heritage!
This house and it’s historic importance should be saved and used in the education of the students of this school district. Save it and use it to educate young people!
I lived in Champaign many years ago, and love seeing these old historic buildings preserved.
Historical buildings are imparitive to the towns and communication ties in which we live. They tell a story of both harder times and easier times. They are something to cherish and appreciate;;
Beautiful home must be saved
We should be building up this world, not taring it down
This is an architectural monument. Destroying it would be a monstrous insult to architecture.
History is far more important than a parking lot.
heritage is culture
Since it is a historic piece of land I don’t agree with them destroying it.
This historic home is vital to Champaign. No need for a high school parking lot. Take a smaller space and put up a parking deck.
History!!
I would hope a school system (of all institutions) would appreciate the need to remember our history and learn lessons from the past. Atlanta is tearing down beautiful old homes at a record pace and soon it will look like a giant suburb devoid of trees. But one shining example is Paideia School that has incorporated numerous houses into their campus (K-12). It's amazingly beautiful and teaches the kids about preservation and reducing our footprint in the world. Plus it's a beautiful and inspirational place to visit.
Seriously, who would consider tearing down history? For a parking lot? A crime!
It’s a historical building and should be preserved not demolished!
Erasing history like this cannot ever be seen again. Think of that. It's not just for now. It's for EVER. This and countless other historic and great properties MUST be saved for future generations.
It needs to be saved
My apartment in the sixties! With roommates . . . We had a large living room with wall to ceiling bookcases. It had been a grand ballroom in its younger days. My bedroom had French doors to enter from. A lot of nostalgia for me. Would be a shame to lose it!
This house is beautiful! It would be a total shame to replace it with an ugly parking lot!
I am signing this because history is important to me. Too many structures are torn down in the name of money.
Demolishing a unique building for an ugly parking lot is pathetic, not progress.
I am saddened to see that our history is CONSTANTLY shoved aside in the name of progress, but a car park is NOT progress. #SaveOurHistory
Je signe parce que nous devons conserver une histoire. C'est une héritage que nous laisserons à nos enfants. Les hommes passent mais l'histoire reste éternelle. keep a story ( a memory) . It is a legacy we will leave to our children. Men go by but the story remains eternal
This historic building doesn't need to be sent to a landfill when it can be saved!
Architecture of this type needs to be preserved.
Historic buildings need to be preserved. They are our heritage.
Everything I've seen and heard of this house has significance and character and is important to thousands of people. I trust David and his judgement as well as those who wish to save it and would like to support this
History must not be memorized through words, but places and things as well.
There is no need to destroy this beautiful—and historically significant structure—for a surface parking lot. The plans are still in flux, let's chart the responsible and respectful course to preserve this piece of architectural history. As one of only 10 works of residential building by Daniel Burnham still extant in the US, this matters locally, regionally, and nationally.
This would be the equivalent of buying Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water to tear it down and build a water park. Burnham is one of the most influential architects and urban planners in U.S. history. His work and buildings should be preserved to inspire future generations--maybe even students at Central High who never knew urban planning could be a career path. Rather than demolish a rare landmark like, the city should solicit think of an innovative urban planning solution like Burnham would have done himself.
Historical building should be saved !!
IM READING DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY. PLEASE DONT TEAR DOWN THIS HOUSE FOR SOME CHEAP, BROKEN DOWN PARKING LOT. I AM SO MAD RIGHT NOW
BECAUSE HE IS HISTORICAL
A parking lot holds no history. Please rethink destroying such a remarkable building.
It's important to our history!!!
As i fully agree that Property and society Developement should respect remarkable landmarks for the Future .
It's an important part of history, let's not erase it.
It’s historical and a part of the community
It should be preserved. Beautiful home.
It’s a wonderful bit of construction.
This beautiful piece of history should be saved -- why don't they build a parking garage on some parking lot they already have -- save this HOME!!
Because old houses shouldn’t be torn down
How stupid are these people. It needs to be saved for the generations to come.
THIS is an absolutely STUPID thing to do. ANYONE that votes for this should be in the middle of the house and let the rubble fall upon them. This is not an educated idea.
We have enough parking lots... keep the HISTORICAL building
To demolish a beautiful building for parking is ludicrous.
Historic homes in good condition need to be saved for education and remembrance
Talk with Zak Rawlin who saved the Gladys Wright home in Phoenix. Along with Taliesin West and FLW Foundation, they may be able to offer wisdom.
Hello, I am president of Tredyffrin Historic Preservation Trust, a local nonprofit historical society in Valley Forge (Chester County), Pennsylvania. We were able to save the 18th century Covered Wagon Inn from demolition by CVS. As a result of our efforts, CVS Pharmacy redesigned its plans and saved the Inn from demolition. BTW, our local municipality has NO historic preservation ordinance of protection so CVS was in its right to demolish the building -- it took a groundswell of support of opposition to save the building. I'm more than happy to exchange information if someone would like to get in touch with me.
History must be saved for future generations!!!!
SHAME on all of them!!!!!!!!!!!!
really....a parking lot.????
Are you kidding me???
Has this petition gotten in front of Perkins + Will directly?
I could understand if this glorious old beauty was like the Solon Brick house but this is not the case..this historic mansion should never be demolished..throughout our country historic preservation is part of most cities ..Colonial Williamsburg..New Orleans..San Francisco..and thousands of smaller towns as,well..Champaign Urbana is a community blessed with many but dwindling architectural history..SAVE THE BURNHAM MANSION.
What a disaster this would be. I can't even believe that this would be torn down for a parking lot - Church Street would never be the same. Repurposing this exquisite building will be good for the community and is simply the right thing to do.
When I was a student at Central, I could ride a bus, but I chose to ride my bike, take a city bus, get a ride from a friend or parent. Todays kids are way too lazy, over privileged , They don't need a parking lot. The lazy sods. I am so disappointed that my old school district would be so short sighted and so easily led as to believe kids need cars in downtown Champaign.
if they tear it down, Champaign loses yet another stately, beautiful ,architecturally significant building. How many deaths will it take till they know? Too many great houses have died.
It would be such a loss for the community to lose such a treasure.
Why would anyone want to destroy this historic beautiful home. I'm from the Midwest and have always loved the old architecture in the small towns. Save this home.
I sure hope this helps save this special building.
To destroy an important architectural specimen such as this for the sake of a parking lot would be a complete travesty. There is far more to be gained in preserving Mr. Burnham's legacy. Please - we ask that you reconsider this regrettable decision.
Please don’t destroy this beautiful building.
Wouldn't it be more responsible to use that expensive land up on North Prospect (purchased without purpose by the School Board) for the athletic fields? Central has never had adjacent sports fields and has survived without. Losing these buildings for parking lots is obscene and totally irresponsible on the part of the Board.
What’s else can I do to help out? I live in Australia now...
Urban planners do not consider history, this is a constant mistake they make Architectural beauty is never considered. There are other solutions but some government pockets are being lined to push ugly projects that will make money for construction, architects etc. In most cases they are ugly square boxes cement with no beauty no creativity. Drop by Hollywood between the empty cement buildings & the homeless living on the streets it is a great place to visit!
I'm always sorry to lose our history in favor of new construction that could be accommodated in another manner. I don't know enough of the details to know whether this is the best/only solution for this school, but it would be the greatest of ironies to demolish a Burnham home for failure to plan thoughtfully.
Destroying the fabric of the city for the necessary evil of parking can certainly be done in a more creative manner than killing the goose that lays the golden egg. The historic buildings are what make the area so pleasant and welcoming! Please work on using these buildings for school offices or classrooms and move or shrink the parking areas.
What is wrong with people!! Save, save, save
How will Champaign honor its history and architecture? I certainly hope not by paving it over.
This is really sad spending all that money to demolish beautiful buildings. Just doesn't make sense.
I really can't believe that a school is promoting demolition of such an historical building. Don't schools teach history? Shame shame shame! Especially for a parking lot. Promote ride sharing and biking to school. What about a parking garage? If you must build a parking lot, at least move the building to a safe spot. Not too hard to do if you use your brains, which I thought teachers and the administration had. Simply unbelievable that demolishing the building is even a thought! Again, shame on you!
Schools today are too expensive and unsustainable. Instead of building a building that fits on a standard city block, they have to have sprawling campuses created by gobbling up half the neighborhood they’re supposed to serve.
I can’t follow the logic or lack of accountability behind the district’s actions. I hope reason and common sense reign.
As frequent travelers the first thing we look for in exploring a new town is the historic district and amazing old houses. The Burnham house and neighborhood are a destination. The we look for local restaurants. Please save these buildings for future generations; and to contribute to your tourism economy. All for the welfare of your town.
Why would the school system want to destroy the glory of its own city? Unbelievable!!

I am so sick of our architectural heritage being destroyed.;
Historical buildings are imparitive to the towns and communication ties in which we live. They tell a story of both harder times and easier times. They are something to cherish and appreciate;;
